The process of psychotherapy encourages the cultivation of a moment-to-moment awareness of your thoughts and feelings. It also nurtures a sense of curiosity and interest in your inner world and how your past influences the way you live your life today.
This usually includes exploring the defenses and coping mechanisms you developed to protect yourself as a child. This awareness helps you recognize and release the unconscious re-enactment of old patterns, allowing you to have conscious choice in how you communicate, interact and live.
A significant aspect of therapy is a reclaiming of parts of yourself that live in the "shadow," the unrecognized, cast-off part of your psyche. These may be parts of yourself you don't like or are ashamed of; however, they are equally likely to be your joy, creativity or capacity to love.
As you begin to explore and accept all parts of yourself, it is likely that you will experience a renewed sense of connection to yourself, others and Life. This will allow you to engage more fully in life and be more capable of loving yourself and others.
